Chapter Thirteen

All to himself? That was a stretch with the eyes of those seated around the table—and maybe throughout the gym—riveted expectantly on the two of them.

Macy hadn’t missed the wink one of the men gave Jake to confirm Al’s directive. Poor Jake. In her public role as a popular blogger she’d endured the meddling of matchmakers and heard more than her fair share of well-intentioned jokes at her expense. She seldom stayed more than two weeks, maybe a month, in one place, but Jake had lived here many years. The teasing had to get old.

A stylishly coiffed woman—Alisa?—seated next to the chamber president’s wife gave her a sympathetic look and changed the subject. “Jake, how is your grandmother? Is she planning to come back to Canyon Springs or stay in Phoenix with your sister’s family? We were wondering if it’s too hard for her here without your grandfather.”

“She’s a tough old gal.” Jake sounded proud of her. “I imagine she’ll be back before it gets too hot in the Valley.”

“I’m glad to hear it. The next time you talk to her, please tell her we miss her.”

Others murmured agreement.

“I’ll do that. I know she misses everyone here, too.”

The woman then again deftly redirected the table conversation to the high school track team’s recent achievements. Thank goodness for sports.

Macy used the opportunity to turn to Jake, who seemed intent on studying something or someone across the room. Paris? He’d said he wasn’t seeing her, but relationships had been known to mysteriously change overnight and she hadn’t spoken to him for days. She touched his arm lightly to get his attention, keeping her voice low.

“How was your day?” She couldn’t help but notice how his clean-cut good looks were enhanced by the charcoal suit, white shirt and burgundy tie. No doubt she wasn’t the only woman there tonight who’d taken notice as he’d passed by.

“Good. Good. And yours?”

“Busy. There’s a load of stock to unpack at the Warehouse with seasonal guests soon to arrive.” He returned her smile, noticing that she’d remembered the politically correct terminology he’d shared earlier. Her spirits rose. “Customers are stopping in more frequently, too. Sharon says they’re early birds who want to catch a prime campground or cabin spot.”

“Or they’ve been reading your blog and didn’t want to miss meeting you. You had quite a following gathered here before I broke things up.”

He leaned in slightly, his jacketed arm brushing hers, and she caught the familiar scent of his aftershave. He’d seldom been this close to her in the past other than when he’d kissed her. How effortless it would be to now lift her face to his and...

“It looked to be getting a little crowded,” he added.

If she didn’t know better, she’d think Jake was jealous.

“It wasn’t how it appeared. Those men were trying to talk me into featuring local real estate businesses this week and providing links to their websites.”

“Excuses, excuses.” His now-husky voice lowered further. “Just a reason to chat with a beautiful woman.
